The South Asia Region comprises eight countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) that range in size from India (with a population of over 1 billion) to Maldives (with 0.3 million people).

Over the past two decades, the South Asia Region (SAR) experienced a long period of robust economic growth, averaging six percent a year, leading to a declining poverty rate and improvements in human development! Extreme poverty fell from 58 percent to 15 percent from 1981 to 2014, while the primary school completion rate rose from 50 percent in 1980 to 90 percent in 2019.

Now, against a backdrop of Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, exacerbating debt woes, Pakistan’s catastrophic climate-change-fueled floods, a global slowdown, and impacts of the war in Ukraine, South Asia faces an unprecedented combination of shocks on top of the lingering scars of the COVID-19 pandemic. Growth in the region is dampening, underscoring the need for countries to build resilience! Long-term development gains in the region are increasingly threatened by the staggering social and economic impacts of climate-related hazards.

800 million (or 44%) people in South Asia today live in locations that would become moderate or severe climate hotspots by 2050 without climate action. Climate change could result in 62 million people in SAR being pushed below the extreme poverty line by 2030 and floods alone could cost an estimated USD 215 billion annually by 2030.
